The Picasso Museum in Barcelona is considered to be the center for understanding the formative years of Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Open to the public in 1963, the museum houses a collection of over 3,800 works and offers an prolific exhibit of temporary exhibitions. But the Picasso Museum is also a testimony of the artist´s relationship with Barcelona, a close and inseparable relationship, forged in his youth, that lasted throughout his life.
Thanks to the will of Picasso and his friend Sabartés Jaume, Barcelona now has work from the artist´s youth, as well as the complete series Las Meninas, one of the most significant artists of the twentieth-century.
The museum, which has undergone successive expansions and renovations, is entering a new stage with the opening of programs that encouage knowledge and education through visitor participation. The museum is aiming to be a space activating dialogue, and critical reading which will fascilitate new perspectives on Picasso and the collection in general.
