5 Women Wearing the Same Dress: the Ins and Outs of a Wedding

Theatre 17/03/2010

The Almería Theatre, located in Barcelona's Gràcia neighbourhood, reopened its doors this past March 4, following the refurbishment of the old Casa Almería theatre, with the play 5 Women Wearing the Same Dress (5 noies i una vestit, in Catalan). This comedy uses marriage as a means of masking the desires and aspirations of its five main characters.

The storyline of 5 Women Wearing the Same Dress takes place amidst an ostentatious wedding in Tennessee. Five girls, all dressed alike, take refuge in a room above the dinner-party being held in the garden. Here we meet Francesca, the sweet, insecure and overtly fundamentalist Catholic cousin of the bride, Mindy, the groom's lesbian sister, Georgeanne who, embittered by a failed marriage, behaves in scandalous fashion, Meredith, the bride's rebellious cousin who holds a secret, and Trisha, the attractive yet incompliant friend whose cynicism towards men crumbles when she meets Tripa, a charming bad-boy. Five extremely different women who discover they share a common emotional thread.

Actresses Georgina Latre, Anna Casas, Savina Figueras, Ariadna Suñé and Guida Uyà were selected to recreate this comedy which serves to criticize American society. It was created by Alan Ball, winner of an Oscar, a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his original script for the film American Beauty, and renowned for his script-writing work in the TV series Six Feet Under. The play is directed by Víctor Álvaro, who has also become the new theatre's new director, alongside his company Gataro.

According to Víctor Álvaro, the Almería Theatre's objective is to tell stories through an avant-garde and quality repertoire apt for all tastes, in the style of London and New York.

5 Women Wearing the Same Dress will be playing until April 4, 2010.
