43rd Brocanters Fair on Diagonal
12/03/2010
Over 20 years of Brocanters on Diagonal
The Brocanters (a manner of second-hand goods dealers) are back on Diagonal. A consummate classic. Two editions each year, in March and November. Items bought on the street, urban setting, on Diagonal Avenue (between Plaça Francesc Macià and Beethoven), stretched along the walking paths. The Brocanters' goods have always been highly valued.
It is common knowledge that antiques dealers deal in objects and works over 100 years old, while the goods that Brocanters handle are usually 40 years old or more (or course there are always exceptions, especially when it comes to collectors' items, furniture and decorations from the 60s, 70s and 80s). While people generally say that Brocanters deal in objects roughly 50 years old, reality indicates that the norms have receded, and some of my most highly sought after items come from the 1960s. No problem.
This, the 43rd Edition of the Brocanters Fair on Diagonal can be defined in three words: Antiques, Collectors' Items and Decor.
Antiques have been the constant fixture, their bread and butter, but things are evolving. Now, all manner of collectors' items are becoming increasingly fashionable and Brocanters, naturally, have forged an important role within the world of collectors. It is the Brocanters' job to search for, find and offer collectors the pieces they are missing.
Brocanters are also forging alliances with the younger generations, who see them as a means of acquiring items that they can use to personalise their homes, adding an original touch to more often than not factory-made furniture. This way, young couples have come by that designer psychedelic coloured chair from the 1960s, perhaps made of plastic, which suits their apartment perfectly. Or that piece of furniture now gracing the dining room, which contracts brilliantly with their modern furnishings. Or the antique item in the hall... Younger generations have found in Brocanters a group of professionals that allows them to personalise their homes. This alliance will be crucial in the world of the Brocanters in the years to come.
