Frederic Ballell. La Rambla 1907-1908

Exhibition 14/04/2010

Brainchild of Puerto Rico born photographer Frederic Ballell, one of the chief exponents of first generation Catalan photojournalists, we are hereby presented the exhibition "Frederic Ballell. La Rambla 1907-1908", early 20th century life on Barcelona's popular walkway.

"Frederic Ballell. La Rambla 1907-1908" offers a reflection on what life looked like on La Rambla and the different characters that comprised its personality, displaying the mix of social classes then present in Barcelona. With over 100 early 20th century photographs, all previously unreleased and on display for the first time, this exhibit shows how the photographer captured the essence of La Rambla in the time between 1907 and 1908. The pictures, vintage copies created by the sun's direct blackening process on paper, are arranged in order from north to south, from La Rambla de Canaletes to La Rambla de Santa Mónica, although images from the upper section predominate, between La Boquería market and Canaletes.

"Yet his pictures of La Rambla are different, because they don't reflect the events he covered as a graphic reporter, but rather the every day life of that street and its protagonists", assured Rafel Torella, conservationist at the Photographic Archive, which acquired Ballell's catalogue in 1945.

"Frederic Ballell. La Rambla 1907-1908" forms part of the 4-exhibition programme that constitutes the "Secret Guide to La Rambla". This show features more than 250 photographs from some 43 distinct photographers and traces a route through a large number of images that depict La Rambla and its environment from the end of the 19th century to present day.

Entrance to the exhibit is free, and it can be viewed in the headquarters of Barcelona's Photographic Archive until May 22, 2010.
