Mariscal's Barcelona
Barcelona Walk
In a conversation rather than fun Chavi told us of Barcelona, his inspiration and the work being done today.
What are the right visitors to Barcelona?
Those who do not have to a backpack, these are perfect. Those who have no home, no passport, no papers, more desagraciados. These are people, like my friend Pérez Porro, who has nothing to do, just dope ... that's why we say so (laughs). It is a great painter, is beautiful everything she does ... also people who need to change in order to have a better future for their children ... that's what this city needs.
Where to send them first?
A Montjuic ... To a place called Miramar, the sea looks at you and you look at the sea ... ... Montjuic climb by a rope which is like an elevator with windows that go flying through the port ... The funicular ...
Did you know that there are dinners?
He did not, I once I taught there for all students, was a day that was very windy and the tower was moving ...
Then, they tended to start at Montjuic, why there?
View from the air or from the same mountain is very special, is a mountain that is Pegadita the sea. Why Montjuic? For the stone. With this stone built many homes throughout the area. The mountain is the mother of the port. Barcelona has always been trying to reclaim the land, always. Montjuic! That is the mother of many houses and all ... the mother of mountains, therefore missing many pieces ... and from there you can also see all of Barcelona, which is the valley between a big mountain that is the Tibidabo, the sea and then the rivers Llobregat and Besos; that rectangle is Barcelona, crossed by a diagonal, is fantastic. So, Barcelona is not like Los Angeles or Madrid are in the middle of a desert and no limits. It is a very specific space, very limited, we can not grow, we can only go a bit up and a bit towards the sea, so the Forum has gained a bit of the sea. And the new beaches also gained the sea.
What do you think is the solution for that?
The future of Barcelona is to make an archipelago of artificial islands from garbage, broken cars and boats, and as of restoring all the waste we produce to build the new Barcelona, Barceloneta that would be detached from the earth and would be those new islands.
A bit like what they are doing in Dubai, but this is a very artificial ...
Yes, but at the same time you would have some very good references. Being in front of the city have a reference that is what gives you Montjuic or Tibidabo, which is seeing all that space where everyone moves there and gives you a more social space, here we all live together.
What proposals are cooking now in your study?
We are making an animated film, a feature film is a love story between two musicians ... It's a project we're doing with Fernando Trueba. Music is, of course, Cuban music and Latin jazz is about ... It is a bolero, a great love story.
We have also made a collection of wallpaper with a company in Barcelona called Inks Three NCBs. Is being distributed worldwide and is working very well. We also a collection of cooking, eating, dishes and cutlery.
Besides working on the project of the New Botiga in Portal del Angel, in the store H & M, which is a historical place where was the seat of Natural Gas, three floors, a trendy clothing store.
We are also working on a very nice collection of lamps and outdoor tables, also things for children, comic books, that's what I want.
Have you thought about a Marshall museum?
No! (laughs). But now we are preparing a very beautiful exhibition at the Design Museum in London, will be in spring of next year. Somehow I empty it and fill it almost all, of thousands of things: small sculptures, carpets, textiles, many T-shirts, many drawings, creating as different corners where people almost have to depart from that great junk (laughs).
Why did Cobi?
The truth, because he commissioned.
What do you think of the mascot of Beijing 2008?
I think it worked very well, reflects the Chinese identity. Asians tend to work much as communities and the concept of individuality is not highly developed, so I think the idea that they were characters that were completely equal and five instead of one that is fine. It also explains this point very well as military and organized from the top activities in China.
"Javier, where you find the best flavor of Barcelona? What restaurant would you find? Any recommendations?
I recommend trying to go and looking, and stay where they please. The truth is that I have favorite places but you're not I say (laughs). I do not pretend that people go to them because a fool as I say we have to go. I prefer that people go looking, they decide for themselves.
And when a person comes to Barcelona for the first time where I could find the taste of the city? How amb tomàquet bread?
It depends on each one. I prefer places where people will eat that works in Barcelona. That's a very good indicator to see the city.
And what about El Bulli, "is the Catalan cuisine?
I wish I could! El Bulli is not a restaurant, a laboratory, which is investigating the kitchen of the future. It is a great place, but is mostly a laboratory of ideas, concepts, research continues.
Something that can be found in Barcelona is people dedicated to artistic research, flavors ...
I think it's something that also exists in other cities, do not believe that Barcelona is a good example. If anything, we will truly be like people in all parts of us engaged in trying to investigate and to seek new ways, but thank God it is quite common in cities such as Milan, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Boston. I think Barcelona has a long, especially entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs with a stake and creating innovations. But I think within the scope of what Spain is, yes it is a city where tradition has always been investigated more, have been and are better able to transgress, but to find new ways in music, art, design in the kitchen ... but really, who also is a model. At the corporate level Barcelona is a city that is innovating.
I find it a lot of foreign people who are exploiting the potential of the city and tries to exploit these projects.
I think people coming from outside, like me, they find something very nice in Barcelona:a city that is north in a country that is in the south. By having very good weather, the street becomes a public place where many things are mixed, and where people go out and manifested.
Do you find that Barcelona is feminine and masculine maybe Madrid?
Man, if you compare it with Madrid could be yes, but Barcelona can also be very male, depends on how the compare.
Barcelona has more curves, is not as rectangular ...
The truth is that I had not thought of. Just now women have a different level of contribution. There are people like Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis has done and is doing very good things. Increasingly there is more communication products, image, artistic or undertakings are made by women. They provide the feminine side, in the best sense of the word, that make society more balanced and that we not only males who are producing things.
